Lost Message Archives
Can anyone tell me if I can retrieve lost YIM message archives from my hard drive??? Last night my hard drive was "erased" & everything was reinstalled. I've had no problem with Yahoo e-mail & old e-mails, but with YIM I was upgraded to the 8.0 version & had been using the 7.5. Like an idiot I didn't realize I had to save my archived IM's. I assumed it would be like the old e-mails & still be available. They aren't. I'm willing to try data recovery, but would like to know if it's even possible to retrieve them. I've tried contacting Yahoo by e-mail & it was useless. I'll try the phone #'s now that I've found them.
This is like losing a yrs. worth of letters & conversations from a loved one. Please help if anyone has ideas. |

Lost IM archives
Your IM archive files are stored on your own PC's hard disk, not on Yahoo's server. So if your disk has been "erased" they have probably gone for good. However, much depends upon the thoroughness of the "erasure" process. Was all data simply deleted without a re-format? Was the disk re-formatted? If it was re-formatted, was every byte over-written? The answers to these questions will determine the chance of getting any of your archive files back. It's probably a job for a data recovery specialist.
By the way, from the way you speak about your emails I assume that you are accessing them on the Yahoo server, and so these were not lost along with your IM files. If this is the case, please take note of the many reports here of people losing their data stored only on Yahoo servers, and back it all up locally, either to hard drive or CD. Otherwise you may one day join the long queue of people who have left it up to Yahoo and lost everything. Good luck. thain |

Lost IM archives
A post-script to what I just posted:-
Don't forget the IM archives held by the people you've chatted to. The same conversations will be archived on their PCs too (assuming they have had archiving enabled). You could do worse than just ask the important people to send you their copies of those archive files. thain |
